Gov. Perdue Kicks Off Flag Project
On January 14, 2008, Governor Sonny Perdue and the USS GEORGIA
Return to Service Committee announced the USS Georgia Flag Project,
an effort to take a Georgia state flag across the entire state and
into all 159 Georgia Counties for recognition by local officials and
the signing of a log book. The flag and log book traveled the state,
visiting every one of Georgia's Counties so that all Georgians could
participate in welcoming the USS Georgia home.
On March 27, 2008, the flag and log book, along with countless
proclamations and other official documents, were presented to the
Captain and crew of the USS GEORGIA during the final flag ceremony
held in Camden Count, home of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, the
proud new home base of the USS GEORGIA. The flag will be displayed
onboard the ship as a testament to the support of her namesake State
for the crew of the USS GEORGIA now and into the future.
The Flag Project was headed by Navy League member and RTS Committee
Flag Project Coordinator Capt Don Giles, USN (Ret.) who worked with
the 16 Georgia Regional Development Centers in planning and carrying
out this unprecedented project. This is the first time such a
project has ever been attempted anywhere in the U.S. Click on the
thumbnails below for a larger image of the photos taken during the county
ceremonies.
