Return to Service
Welcome to the USS GEORGIA (SSGN 729) Return to Service web site
sponsored by the Camden - Kings
Bay Council of the Navy League of the U.S.,
The Camden Partnership,
the Camden County Chamber of Commerce,
and the Naval Submarine League.
A ceremony to welcome the USS GEORGIA Return to Service as a Guided
Missile Submarine (SSGN), following her conversion from a Ballistic Missile
Submarine (SSBN), was held aboard Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay on
Friday, March 28, 2008. Several thousand people - including national,
state and local dignitaries - were on hand for this unique and
memorable ceremony welcoming the USS GEORGIA and her crew to her new home in
Camden County, Georgia.
Governor Sonny Perdue and the USS Georgia Return to Service Committee
sponsored
“Bringing the
USS Georgia Home: Celebrating Georgia’s Ambassadors for Peace” - a statewide
student art competition for Georgia art students of every age. Camden County High School student
Nicole Wasson's entry was chosen as the
"Captain's Choice" grand prize winner.
Nicole's color pencil drawing incorporates the submarine, state seal, state
bird, state flower and a Georgia peach. Nicole's artwork also
graces a limited edition USS GEORGIA T-shirt.
A list of all category winners is available
here.
The Return to Service Committee also sponsored the
Georgia Flag Project, a state-wide effort
by the 16
Georgia Regional Development Centers to hand-carry a Georgia State flag
to all 159 counties in the State to for recognition by local officials and
the signing of a log book. The flag
and log book traveled the length and breadth of the State to allow all Georgians
to participate in welcoming the USS Georgia home. On
March 27, 2008, the flag and log book, along with countless proclamations
and other official documents and memorabilia, were presented to the Captain and crew of the
USS GEORGIA during the final flag ceremony held in Camden Count, home of
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, the proud new home base of the USS GEORGIA.
The flag will be displayed onboard the ship as a testament to the support of
her namesake State for the crew of the USS GEORGIA now and into the future. Visit the USS
GEORGIA Flag Project Photo Gallery to browse photos taken during each of
the county ceremonies.
